Questions about perimenopause

What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause- puberty 2.0- is the transitional time prior to menopause.

It can begin around age 35, when some women may begin to feel the effects of estrogen on mental and emotional balance. In general, though, the transition usually starts in the early 40s. This time frame can last 4-10 years (this is noted in many resources to be the average time frame, but each woman is different).

This transitional stage comes in 2 parts- early and late.

Early stage- this stage is usually more manageable. Most women may not even recognize they are in this stage. But for those women who are in tune with their bodies, their cycles, and their mental and emotional states, she will feel it. She will notice ‘ something is ‘off’ or ‘not quite right’. She may go to her doctor and ask questions to find out what the heck is going on.

Late stage- this stage is getting closer to the day of menopause. This is where many women will really feel the hormone fluctuations. Some may experience more hot flashes, night sweats, sleep issues, weight gain (common location is midsection), irritability that may resemble She-Hulk., heart palpitations, panic or anxiety attacks, depression, the urge to eat more, and periods will become ‘irregular’.

Menopause transition is like the metamorphosis of a caterpillar to a butterfly.

What is happening?

Perimenopause is not caused by aging. It happens alongside aging. Along with all the other things that occur within our body and life as we celebrate another birthday.

Perimenopause is a transformation (changing) from one stage of life to another.

Perimenopause is a sequence of processes and events:

~ Progesterone begins to decline

~ High & low estrogen

Fluctuations of estrogen and progesterone affect other organs and systems

  • Adrenals

  • Thyroid

  • Pancreas

  • Lipids

  • Immune system

  • Digestive/Gut Health

  • Metabolism

  • Adipose cells

  • Brain

  • and more!
